3rd Annual Match Play Challenge Update
The competition has been fierce for the honor of capturing the title of Match Play Champion.  By the end of April three (3) players had advanced to the semi-final round that begins on May 11th.  So far, Art Hightower, Cam Wills (defending Champion), and Andrew Guest have advanced. Stay tuned for updates as the competition continues in May.

The May JLGA Blitz- One Player Scramble
The next competition for JLGA members will be the One Player Scramble, a 9-holer scheduled for May 19th.  Tee times will begin at approximately 4:00 PM.  This is a 9-Hole individual medal tournament.  The competition will be played on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Tee times will begin in the late afternoon ( 4:00 PM or later) and be announced at least 48 hours before the competition.  Keen to find out more about this format?  Keep reading!

Each player may play 2 balls from the tee.  The player selects a ball from which to play their second shot. Each player then may play two (2) balls from that position and then selects the best-resulting shot from which to play their next shot.  That process continues until the ball is holed.

Registration has been open since April 19th.  There is still time to register to compete. Click here to register.

    You Make the Call
Every month we try to update y’all on rules and GHIN/the World Handicap System.  You must post scores for the handicap system to work and to compete in many competition formats.  There seems to be some confusion about what constitutes a score that you can post.  The first consideration is if it is a competition format that can be used for posting.  The guidelines from Rule 2-1a- Played in an Authorized Format of Play follow. You should be using an app (SCGA, GHIN, CGA, etc.) to post on the day of play. And, always post the hole by hole score!

    JLGA May 18th Blitz
On May 18th we will host the One Player Scramble.  How does that work? You ask!

Each player may play 2 balls for each shot.  This will be a gross and net competition at 50% of your Handicap Index (HI).

Be on the look out for the invitation to register.

    GHIN UPDATE
GHIN since 2020 uses the World Handicap System to manage and compute handicap indexes.  Please read the following five (5) things that you need to know to properly utilize our handicap system as JLGA members. Please read and make sure that you follow these processes when making adjustment before posting scores and getting your playing handicap (PC).

    1. Your Handicap Index may change. But that’s ok! Finally, players around the world will have an apples-to-apples handicap. Your new Handicap Index will be more responsive to good scores by averaging your eight best scores out of your most recent 20 (currently, it’s 10 out of 20 with a .96 multiplier). In short, your Handicap Index will be determined by your demonstrated ability and consistency of scores. In most cases for golfers in the U.S., it will change less than one stroke.

    2. You need to know your Course Handicap. In the new system, your Course Handicap will be the number of strokes needed to play to par. This will result in greater variance in that number and presents a change, as historically it has represented the number of strokes needed to play to the Course Rating. This is a good thing, as par is an easy number to remember. Target score for the day? Par plus Course Handicap. The Course Rating will now be inherent within the calculation to be more intuitive and account for competing from different tees.

    3. Net Double Bogey. The maximum hole score for each player will be limited to a Net Double Bogey. This adjustment is more consistent from hole to hole than the Equitable Stroke Control procedure. Net Double Bogey is already used in many other parts of the world and the calculation is simple: Par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive.

    4. Your Handicap Index will be revised daily. One way that handicapping is being modernized is a player’s Handicap Index will update daily (which will provide a fairer indication of a player’s ability in the moment), if the player submitted a score the day before. On days where the player does not submit a score, no update will take place.

    5. Safeguards in the new system. The new system will limit extreme upward movement of a Handicap Index, automatically and immediately reduce a Handicap Index when an exceptional score of at least 7 strokes better is posted, and account for abnormal course or weather conditions to ensure that scores reflect when a course plays significantly different than its established Course Rating and Slope Rating.

These safeguards help maintain accuracy of a Handicap Index, greater integrity within the system and promote fun and fair play for golfers of all abilities.

The Latest from GHIN and SCGA

What’s the Big Deal with Hole-by-Hole Scores?
The CGA highly encourages golfers to post scores by using the hole-by-hole method. Posting scores hole by hole takes very little time! You can record scores as you play or at the end of the round by referring to your paper scorecard.  What are the benefits of posting scores hole by hole? The Maximum Hole Score rule is automatically applied! This leads to an accurate Handicap Index®. Posting errors are minimized. Hole-by-hole statistics are recorded. View your percentage of birdies, pars, bogies, etc.Your home club will have hole-by-hole data recorded for statistical analysis.  If your round is cut short before completing 18 holes, you will need to post hole by hole anyway!

    YOU MAKE THE CALL
Your ball is in the fairway in a puddle of water- What are your options?

A- Your ball is in what the Rules call “temporary water.” You may play your ball as it lies or take free relief. You take free relief by finding the nearest point of complete relief where you are clear of the puddle and then drop your original ball or another ball away from the puddle and within one club-length of that point not nearer the hole (see Rule 16.1b). You may also take relief from a puddle of water if your ball is in the rough, a bunker, or on the putting green (see Rule 16.1c for the bunker or Rule 16.1d for the putting green), but you do not get relief from a puddle inside a penalty area.

Rules of Golf Review– You Make the Call
With “preferred lies” in effect under wet weather rules, a player marked his ball, moved it a club-length, and played his shot without removing the marker.  Penalty????

Under Model Local Rule E-3, preferred lies does not require marking, as this ball is not being replaced, so the penalty for failing to remove the ball marker doesn’t apply to one that was not used to mark the spot of the ball to be lifted and replaced.

Rules of Golf Update for 2025

    Rule 10:

    Rule 10.2:

10.2b/1 – Use of Self-Standing Putter for Alignment Help is Not Allowed

Provided a self-standing putter conforms to the Equipment Rules, it may be used to make a stroke (Rule 4.1a(1)). But the player (or their caddie) is not allowed to set such a putter down to get help in any way that would breach Rule 10.2b.

For example, the player must not set the putter down in a standing position right behind or right next to the spot where the ball lies on the putting green to show the line of play or to help the player in taking their stance for the stroke in breach of Rule 10.2b(3). (Reinstated January 2025)

10.2b(3)/1 – Setting Clubhead on Ground Behind Ball to Help the Player Take a Stance is Allowed

Rule 10.2b(3) does not allow a player to set down an object (such as an alignment rod or a golf club) to help the player take a stance.

However, this prohibition does not prevent a player from positioning their clubhead behind the ball, such as when a player stands behind the ball and places the clubhead perpendicular to the line of play and then, while still holding the club, walks around from behind the ball to take their stance. (Reinstated January 2025)
